This train was named because it traveled the 400 mi between the cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul) and Chicago in 400 minutes. Chicago & North Western Railway was the first system to start a high-speed Chicago-Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul) schedule because it used refurbished instead of new equipmen. All intercity passenger service on Chicago & North Western ended with the formation of Amtrak in 1971.
