The Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railway was formed in 1878 and in 1892 began operating the very first Lake Michigan car ferry, Ann Arbor #1, between Frankfort, Michigan and Kewaunee, Wisconsin. The Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railway went bankrupt in 1893. The road was reorganized in 1895 as the Ann Arbor Railroad.
