The railroad got the name Monon from the convergence of its main routes in Monon, Indiana. The Monon Railroad was headquarted in Chicago, Illinois, had 792 miles of track and had operations in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. The Monon Railroad was merged into the Louisville & Nashville Railroad on July 31, 1971.
