The Reading Railroad nick named the "Reading Lines" with headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania operated in southeast Pennsylvania and neighboring states. Reduced coal traffic coupled with highway competition forced it into bankruptcy in the 1970s. The railroad was merged into Conrail on April 1, 1976.
